Welcome to the South Ayrshire Council Page
Getting it right for every child (GIRFEC) is our National approach underpinning the Scottish Government’s commitment to provide all infants, children, young people and their families with the right support at the right time to reach their full potential. GIRFEC alongside incorporation of the UNCRC into Scots Law and The Promise are the three main pillars underpinning all policy and legislation that relates to infants, children, young people and families in Scotland.
Most infants, children and young people get all the support and help they need from their parent(s)/carer(s), wider network and local community. There may be times, however, when a child or family need additional advice or support. The GIRFEC approach helps children and their families to work in partnership with people (services) that can help them. When we work together, keeping the child at the heart of all planning and actions, life chances for our children will improve.
GIRFEC starts with the universal services of health and education, with a focus on early support and advice.
In South Ayrshire we have been embedding the GIRFEC approach for many years and practice continues to develop as we work to realise our vision to get it right for all of our infants, children and young people. Our GIRFEC led vision for infants, children, young people and families in South Ayrshire is set out within our Children’s Services Plan 2023-2026.
The information contained within this site is designed primarily to support those practitioners across the multi-agency workforce who are involved in the Getting it right for every child approach in South Ayrshire and who come into contact with infants, children, young people, carers and families in the course of their day-to-day work. This will include colleagues in social services, health, education, housing, police and the voluntary sector.
